The Victory Inn in St. Mawes, probably the last remaining real Inn in the village, tucked away up an alley way leading from the harbour. A classic original small roomed low beamed ceilings, with loads of character.
The pub had held its own regatta for all classes since the days of Devenish Brewery based in Redruth, now owned by the nationwide pub chain Punch Taverns. The current tenants, Paul and Sophie, who had only taken over and reopened the pub in the last six weeks, were very keen to keep up the traditions.
Sunday 21st September turned out to be a lovely sailing day after a week of rain and wind, with a steady northerly wind giving perfect conditions. A brilliant fleet of eight B Class and four C Class turned out, outnumbering the other harbour classes and making a wonderful vista in the harbour.
The B fleet, always very competitive, soon established a ‘pecking order ’with ’Nellie May’ taking a good lead over ‘Florence’ and ’Rebecca’. The C fleet saw ’Iris Elizabeth’ well in front of’ Juanita’. Unfortunately Lelia misread the instructions and missed out the last round of the course and Lottie retired.
The prize giving ashore at the Victory was well attended and the Landlord who first put up the cups way back in 1969, Billy Roberts, was on hand to see his Cups presented.
