The sun shone bright over St Mawes with a light easterly down wind start.
Getting away from the start line and out of the harbour was tricky with the wind coming over the Roseland shore, the boats opting for the quay side of the harbour benefitted from a more consistent and stronger wind.
The course for both fleets was port rounding Waterloo then Governor Buoy, turning mark, two rounds, always leaving Lugo buoy to seaward side.
As the afternoon progressed, so did the breeze, getting up to 15 to 18knots at the end.Being an easterly it was not a steady breeze at all, with big shifts and holes.
The two goliaths in B Class, Moon and Grace had a match on their hands and led the fleet around and home. Line honors went to our Dan Trevaskis with Grace, with Moon just under a minute behind at the finish. There was some confusion about the start/finish line regarding the inner distance mark being a mark of the course or not, but, Evelyn being a local boat, got correct and gained a significant advantage knowing the correct rule and ignored the buoy and went on to win the event on corrected time.
In C Class, Lottie and Iris chose to start on the line at the harbour wall side which paid off with Leila and Deliverance in lighter breeze at the pin end. On the turn around Lugo Buoy Lottie and Iris in the front had seconds between them. The fleet of four C Class boats had split with a few hundred yards between the front two and back two. On the second downwind leg between Lugo and Waterloo, the two leaders hugged the St Mawes shore, Iris took a little too much losing the breeze for a few minutes leaving them in a becalmed situation, thus allowing Lotie to just slip quietly away.
Seeing their undoing the boats behind opted to stay well away from the shore, catching the breeze over the hill. Still in the lead, Lottie was now some 300 yards out in front and held this lead to the finish, back in the pack of 3, it was close with three boats tussling for control. Iris was second in the line with an exceptionally close finish separated by only one sec between Leila and Deliverance. Deliverance winning on corrected, but very fair to say, Lottie won on the water.
The prize giving was held in the Social Club with their usual great hospitality, Steve Miles and Charlie Pridmore combining to present the results and prizes.
